Before the 1970's there was no reliable way to screen donors for the hepatitis B virus (HBV), leaving blood transfusion recipients at risk of hepatitis B infection. Abbott introduced the first commercial assay for detection of the hepatitis B surface antigen in 1972 and soon followed with a test for hepatitis A. Through four decades, Abbott has continued to serve hepatitis patients and customers.
